I seriously doubt if the Indian farmers considered it "their IP". The very idea was until recently an alien concept.
What Monsanto seeks to do is no less than to undercut the very basis of agriculture, making the practices of the last 10,000 years illegal. You plant your crop, then you save enough seeds from that crop to plant another crop next year. Monsanto says saving seeds is theft, you have to buy new seeds from Monsanto every year, and they want to own all the best seed lines.
This isn't about "IP", it is about the end of traditional agriculture and the replacement of it with dependency on corporations with patented seeds.
